Walk in the Treetops begins with a guided mountain bike ride from the Big Mountain Village. The ride is one mile long and is suitable for beginners. An optional motorized shuttle is available for those who may not wish to bike.

Bikers and riders arrive at the Walk in the Treetops base camp, which is an authentic cowboy line camp in a clearing in the forest. Here, guests are issued a hip pack (that they may keep), complete with a snack, water and some other Big Mountain goodies. Guests are also fitted with a rock climbing harness and safety lines.

Experienced guides teach guests how to safely move from tree-to-tree using the safety lines. Participants are asked to work together with the buddy system to ensure additional safety.   After the safety orientation, our guides will lead a half-mile hike through the sub-alpine forest.

Educational information is shared about the fantastic Northern Rockies Ecosystem and its variety of plants and animals. During the experience, guests have the opportunity to see an astounding array of plant life, and to learn how many of the native peoples of the area used these plants for food and medicine.
Very lucky guests may catch a glimpse of the local wildlife… perhaps a western tanager, a deer or even a bear! Our guides are very familiar with this ecosystem and guests are encouraged to ask questions.

The hike concludes at the entrance to the suspended boardwalk. Guests climb a short ladder to access the boardwalk, then clip onto safety cables. The boardwalk was constructed in April 2002 and is the first of its kind in the United States.
The boardwalk is 800 feet long and, at its highest point, reaches 70 feet above the forest floor. Two large observation platforms along the way allow guest to take a break while enjoying the breathtaking views of Flathead Valley and Salish Mountains.

The experience concludes with a casual return hike to the line camp and a bicycle or shuttle ride to Big Mountain Village.

Walk in the Treetops is a very exciting and unique way to experience the Rocky Mountains and is recommended for everyone age 10 and older. A height requirement of 54” and a maximum waist of 42” apply and guests should be in good physical condition for the hiking portion of the experience. Please wear comfortable clothing and good, sturdy footwear.
